2009-2010 At a Glance
Head Coach: Brent West

Career Record: 87-21 (all at Cisco)

2008 Record: 14-2 (4-1 District 6-2A)

Last District Title: 2007

Last Playoff Appearance: 2008

Returning Lettermen: 12

Returning Off/Def Starters: 3/5

Base Offense: Multiple I

Base Defense: 4-3

Top Returnees

Tanner Garcia, QB/DB, 5-10, 175, Sr.;
Vegas Hastings, RB/LB, 5-9, 170, Sr.;
Bradley Toler, 6-0, 185, RB, Sr.;
Austin Busby, OL, 6-2, 270, Sr.;
Russell Adams, DL, 5-10, 200, Jr.;
Trevor Honea, DL, 5-9, 175, Jr.

On one hand, Cisco coach Brent West has several holes to fill in 2009, both offensively and defensively.

On the other hand, he is expecting to start eight seniors on each side of the football this year, many of whom saw significant playing time in 2008. So while there may be an early adjustment period while a handful of players learn new positions, the Loboes are still expected to contend for the District 6-2A title.

Whether Cisco can match last season’s 14-2 run, which saw West’s crew reach its third state championship game under West, remains to be seen.

“We graduated more seniors, especially offensively, than we have in a very long time,” West said. “I can’t ever recall ever having just three (starters) back on either side of the football.”

West was referring to the situation faced by his offense, with just three starters returning, one of whom — wide receiver Tanner Garcia — is switching to quarterback.

The line, with the exception of Austin Busby (6-2, 270) is entirely new, but it will be flanked by a veteran backfield of Garcia, fullback Bradley Toler (91-606, eight TDS) and Vegas Hastings, who gained 907 yards as a reserve tailback last year.

Garcia, who served as a backup behind graduated quarterback Josh Bridges, played well behind center during the 2008 playoffs when Bridges suffered a back injury.

Defensively, the Loboes should be sound. Up front, first-team all-district tackle Russell Adams (5-10, 200) returns with Trevor Honea (50 tackles, three sacks) on the inside.

Toler is back at end where he was a second-team all-district pick, as is Hastings at linebacker and Garcia in the secondary.

“Defensively, we feel as though our front seven, especially our front four will be very competitive,” West said. “We think that will be the strong area for us defensively.”
