Albany's Hudson is fierce on offense, defense.
By Evan Ren

ALBANY — If there is anything that Albany’s Elijah Hudson doesn’t do well, it might be his inability to take a breather.

In fact, he’s horrible at it.

Already one of the best linebackers in the Big Country, Hudson now is seeing double duty as the Lions’ starting tailback—a position he was shifted to late last season after Robert Hare suffered an ankle injury.

Of course, it’s one thing to play both ways, as many players do in the lower classifications.

It’s quite another to be a threat for All-Big Country consideration on both sides of the football, and Hudson has been nothing less than that.

Through four games, the 5-11, 185-pound senior not only leads the Lions in tackles with an average of more than 12 per game. He also has has rolled up 956 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns on just 78 carries — an average of 12.2 yards per touch.

In Friday’s 62-27 win against Eastland, Hudson rolled up 369 yards rushing and five scores on just 21 carries, lifting top-ranked Class 1A Albany to a 4-0 record.

“He gives the same effort on defense that he does on offense,” offensive coordinator David Fairchild said. “He doesn’t come off the field very much. He’s out there just about every play.”

Perhaps making Hudson’s numbers even more impressive is the fact that he was removed in the third quarter from Albany’s season-opening 31-6 win against Hawley, once the Lions’ had the game under control.

Had he played a complete game, he may have entered this week with more 1,100 yards rushing.

“This is exactly what I want,” said Hudson, who has earned All-Big Country honors as a defender for two consecutive seasons. “I want to have a hand in what happens on both sides of the ball,”

Thus far, Hudson has had far more than just a hand in what is happening.

He has been a dominant two-way player for the better part of two seasons, collecting 168 tackles in 15 games last year to go with more than 1,200 rushing yards and nine scores.

“He plays with a lot of passion and just loves the game,” head coach Denney Faith said. “He’s got unbelievable instincts, and I’d love to take credit for his ability, but I think a lot of it is just his will to be as good as he can be.

“We’ll give him a few special teams plays (off). But if it’s crunch time, offensively or defensively, he’s going to be out there.”

Needless to say, Hudson keeps himself in top-flight condition, both before and during the season.

Combining distance running with weight training and agility drills, Hudson worked a five-day-per-week weight training regimen during the off season which saw him in the gym each morning and again every afternoon.

“He’s in unbelievable condition,” Faith said. “We lift a couple of times per week during the season, and he’s always wanting to stay in the weight room.

“We try to do our conditioning during our actual practice, so to keep himself in condition, he goes all-out, and he’s always pushing himself during our drills.”

As for what motivates Hudson to push himself so hard, Faith’s theory is that the 18-year-old’s smallish stature might be adding some extra incentive. Had Hudson been blessed with a 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame, things may have come too easy, killing the need for extra work.

As of yet, Hudson has received no contacts from any collegiate programs at any level. But he remains hopeful he can work his way into a roster spot somewhere.

What he won’t do, however, is seek attention in order to accomplish that goal.

“I don’t play this game for myself,” Hudson said. “I play it to bring glory to God, and I play it for my town.

“I wouldn’t want it to be all about me. I’d want it to be about my team and my town.”

HUDSON WILL RETURN FOR SHOWDOWN WITH BRONTE

"After suffering a separated shoulder in the Baird game two weeks ago, Albany running back Elijah Hudson was conspicuously absent in Friday’s 28-14 win over Winters.

He is listed as questionable for Friday’s game with Cross Plains, but is expected to be ready for a huge winner-take-all district showdown at Bronte on Nov. 6."

1A bidistrict: Roscoe pushes No. 1 Albany in 28-7 loss
By Evan Ren
Someone forgot to tell the Roscoe Plowboys they were lining up against the No. 1 team in the state Thursday night. And it took top-ranked Albany nearly three quarters to remind them of it.

At least, that’s the way it appeared in a Class 1A Division II bidistrict matchup, as the Plowboys put a brief scare into Albany before losing 28-7 at Shotwell Stadium.

Elijah Hudson rushed for 241 yards and four scores to lead Albany (11-0), which advances to face Petrolia (4-6) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Graham.

“They’re a good football team — just like any Roscoe team that has ever been around,” Albany coach Denney Faith said. “They’ve been in these kinds of games before, so this isn’t anything new to them.”

With the issue still in doubt at the break, Hudson added a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters, while the Albany defense limited the Plowboys to 219 yards.

Roscoe, which led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 14-7 at the break, finished its campaign at 6-5.

“We knew coming in that we’d get their best shot and they gave it to us,” Faith said. “You can’t take anything away from Roscoe tonight.”

Needing to win the turnover battle, control the clock and contain Hudson to pull off the upset, the Plowboys did everything required to take a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Using a fumble at their 20 by Hudson and a roughing the kicker penalty to extend their opening drive, the Plowboys pushed 80 yards in 14 plays and capped it with an 8-yard touchdown run by Miguel Rangel with 1:38 left in the opening frame.

Hudson, however, began to throw a wrench into the game plan, carrying the ball a total of 10 times with two touchdowns in back-to-back Albany scoring drives before the half ended.

Albany’s first score came at the 9:11 mark of the second when Hudson found the end zone from 25 yards out. One possession later he scored from 19, giving the Lions a 14-7 lead with 45 second left in the half

“Our offensive line is something we’ve really counted on all year long,” Faith said. “And when you can give the ball to Elijah, he’s going to make some plays for you behind some good blocking.”

Roscoe began to hurt itself early in the second half, beginning with a fumbled kickoff which was recovered by George Kelly at the Plowboy 26. Six plays later, Hudson crashed in from 7 yards out to put the Lions up by two scores.

Hudson’s final touchdown — a 1-yard plunge — came with just 47 seconds to play in the game, two plays after Jeremy Corbin returned an interception to the Roscoe 4.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Albany, but this ol’ defense played their hearts out,” said Roscoe coach Wes Williams, whose team limited Albany to 282 yards in total offense. “It’s hard to keep a running back like Hudson, down, but I felt like our kids played hard and ran to the football all night.”

Roscoe threatened twice in the second half, with both drives stalling at the Albany 37 — one via an interception by Marcus Nabers in the third quarter; the other on downs in the fourth.

1A area round: No. 1 Albany starts slowly, pulls away
By Evan Ren
Posted November 19, 2009 at 10:51 p.m.

GRAHAM—"It wasn’t the “Twilight Zone” that the top-ranked Albany Lions walked into Thursday night, but it may have felt like it.

For nearly an entire half, the No. 1 team in the state was held to a scoreless tie by unheralded Petrolia. That is, until running back Elijah Hudson delivered a strong dose of reality in a 33-6 win at Newton Field.

Hudson, who rushed for 239 yards and three scores, delivered two touchdowns in the final 2:35 of the first half to give the Lions control for good.

Albany advances to the regional quarterfinals to face the winner of tonight’s game between Muenster (8-3) and Perrin-Whitt (5-5) at Mineral Wells.

Petrolia, which was limited to 255 yards in total offense, ended its campaign at 4-7.

“We really didn’t play the way we needed to tonight,” Albany coach Denny Faith said. “Our guys fought hard and played hard, but we were just making too many mistakes.”

After hurting itself with a drive-killing turnover inside the Petrolia 30 and six penalties for 45 yards, the Lions were facing an incredible scenario.

Petrolia, which needed a 28-25 win over Munday in Week 10 to qualify its first playoff appearance in six years, was driving for a potential go-ahead score in the middle of the second quarter. The Pirates pushed 55 yards in 11 plays to the Lion 30, before finally stalling on downs.

It took two more Albany possessions before Hudson finally broke loose with a 31-yard touchdown run with 2:35 left in the half.

One possession later, Hudson got into the act again, racing around right tackle and diving over the goal line from 12 yards with 40 seconds left before the break.

“We just came in at half time and told each other that we’ve got to get our heads together and quit making mistakes,” Hudson said. “We were killing ourselves, but we came out in the second half, got things together and look what happened.”

What happened was Hudson scored again, this time at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter on a 2-yard run to give the Lions a 20-0 lead.

Quarterback Leif Johnston followed with a 1-yard scoring run with 5:43 to play, to finally end the competitive phase of the game.

“That’s a good football team over there,” said Faith of Petrolia. “Once you get to this point of the season, nobody is going to just lay down for you.”

The Pirates finally broke into the scoring column with 5:24 remaining, when Carson Cray raced 93 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

Albany’s final score came with 3:05 left on a 1-yard run by Aaron Faith.

“We came out of one of the toughest districts in the state,” said Petrolia coach Derrith Welch. “We came out here with supposedly the No. 1 team in the state and with two or three minutes left in the first half, it was 0-0.

“That just shows our kids that they can play with anybody, as long as they believe in themselves.”

Albany finished with 422 yards in total offense and four turnovers.

Cray led Petrolia with 141 yards rushing on 10 carries."
