1A area round: No. 1 Albany starts slowly, pulls away By Evan Ren Posted November 19, 2009 at 10:51 p.m. GRAHAM—"It wasn’t the “Twilight Zone” that the top-ranked Albany Lions walked into Thursday night, but it may have felt like it. For nearly an entire half, the No. 1 team in the state was held to a scoreless tie by unheralded Petrolia. That is, until running back Elijah Hudson delivered a strong dose of reality in a 33-6 win at Newton Field. Hudson, who rushed for 239 yards and three scores, delivered two touchdowns in the final 2:35 of the first half to give the Lions control for good. Albany advances to the regional quarterfinals to face the winner of tonight’s game between Muenster (8-3) and Perrin-Whitt (5-5) at Mineral Wells. Petrolia, which was limited to 255 yards in total offense, ended its campaign at 4-7. “We really didn’t play the way we needed to tonight,” Albany coach Denny Faith said. “Our guys fought hard and played hard, but we were just making too many mistakes.” After hurting itself with a drive-killing turnover inside the Petrolia 30 and six penalties for 45 yards, the Lions were facing an incredible scenario. Petrolia, which needed a 28-25 win over Munday in Week 10 to qualify its first playoff appearance in six years, was driving for a potential go-ahead score in the middle of the second quarter. The Pirates pushed 55 yards in 11 plays to the Lion 30, before finally stalling on downs. It took two more Albany possessions before Hudson finally broke loose with a 31-yard touchdown run with 2:35 left in the half. One possession later, Hudson got into the act again, racing around right tackle and diving over the goal line from 12 yards with 40 seconds left before the break. “We just came in at half time and told each other that we’ve got to get our heads together and quit making mistakes,” Hudson said. “We were killing ourselves, but we came out in the second half, got things together and look what happened.” What happened was Hudson scored again, this time at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter on a 2-yard run to give the Lions a 20-0 lead. Quarterback Leif Johnston followed with a 1-yard scoring run with 5:43 to play, to finally end the competitive phase of the game. “That’s a good football team over there,” said Faith of Petrolia. “Once you get to this point of the season, nobody is going to just lay down for you.” The Pirates finally broke into the scoring column with 5:24 remaining, when Carson Cray raced 93 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. Albany’s final score came with 3:05 left on a 1-yard run by Aaron Faith. “We came out of one of the toughest districts in the state,” said Petrolia coach Derrith Welch. “We came out here with supposedly the No. 1 team in the state and with two or three minutes left in the first half, it was 0-0. “That just shows our kids that they can play with anybody, as long as they believe in themselves.” Albany finished with 422 yards in total offense and four turnovers. Cray led Petrolia with 141 yards rushing on 10 carries."
