It appears that instead of moving up to TAPPS Div. 1 play Houston Christian has desided to go independent in football for the 2008 season. Does anyone know any of the particulars on why?

The school had been considering a move to SPC, but I have no knowledge on how any of that is going or whether or not that is still an option.
It is odd to see a team go independent though. You feel for the seniors.

Houston Christian went independent because they were a Big Fish In Division II in TAPPS, but when they knew their District was St. Pius, St. Thomas, and Kelly, they straight up BAILED ! That is Extremely Weak. Was it travel ? I don't think so, all those teams are within 75 miles !

This is a disappointment. Generally speaking Coach Johnson has a team that can compete and is a contender when it comes down to district play. I feel that if Houston Christian had the same caliber team that was on the field last season that they could give both St. Thomas and Kelly a good game. A win against either one would most likely result in post district play.

August 29 th. it's going to start again all across the state of Texas. It is a tradition that we all hold close to our hearts. Let us pray that all the young men that play with all their heart get the full benifit of this team sport and end the season without injury and all their health.
Now for the season. Many of the south teams , in the private arena, are playing teams in the UIL before their district play starts.
Houston Second Baptist vs. Sealy High School
Tomball Concordia Lutheran vs. Anahuac High School
The northern (Dallas) teams regularly play UIL teams. Is the reason for this to better prepare the teams in the south for the playoffs? It would be nice to see a team from the south make it to a championship game. Second Baptist was the last team to make it that far and that was in 1999.

I am not sure about other areas of Texas, but in the Panhandle we play UIL schools because their are not many Private Schools that play 11-man football. We are TAPPS Div.IV and have 2 UIL 2A schools on our schedule along with 4-1A schools. We try to select our UIL schedule as best we can to give our kids the most opportunity to win, but with the depth & JV'S that they have, even if they had a losing previous season record, you never know. Winning is our goal, but sometimes playing the UIL teams you just pray for NO injuries and a good contest. If you can make it to your district games healthy, the UIL experiance will definitely pay off. I'm not saying that all UIL schools are more talented than privates, but most do have more kids to draw from and more jingle in their pockets. Some of those kids have played football together all of their lives from sandlot to their SR. year. Our field house is an old public school building and we practice in the park behind it. 95% of equipment is purchased by parents or coaches and most coaches are "heaven sent" volunteers (as with most private schools). We have no stadium. All home games are in rented UIL stadiums,BUT we pray before we play and we play because we love the game. You have me on a role know! By the way, speaking of travel. The last two years we were given the "Yellow Dog" Award by the Amarillo Globe News. 2006 season we traveled to the DFW area 4 times and 5 times in 2007. All during regular season. Im done. God Bless all who do what we do for the kids and the man upstairs.
