"If you have heard any rumors that former Woodson football coach Reece Walker was forced to resign, you're getting bad information, the school district's superintendent says.

Walker, who led the Cowboys to a 12-3 overall record and a trip to the six-man Division II state title game last year, chose to resign the week after a season-opening loss to May.

Reached via telephone, Walker offered no comment on why he suddenly ended his six-year tenure. However, Woodson Superintendent Danny Bellah was willing to clear the air.

"He left on his own -- he wasn't forced to resign or anything like that," Bellah said. "He puts a tremendous amount of pressure on himself. It's probably a lot of undue pressure, but you know how it is with coaches.

"But basically, he reached a point where he felt as though he had lost his effectiveness with the team and felt it was in the best interests of the team and the community if he went ahead and got out."

Walker posted a 36-23 record during his stay at Woodson, including the Cowboys' 44-38 loss to Motley County in last season's Division II title game.

"Our school and our community owes coach Walker a tremendous amount of gratitude for all he has done through the years for our program," Bellah said."
