6-man star seeks college spot
By Evan Ren
Thursday, September 18, 2008

STRAWN --"Tucked away in the far eastern corner of the Big Country, roughly 35 miles northwest of Stephenville, sits Strawn, a community of fewer than 800 people.

It is the home of one of Texas' top six-man football programs. Strawn won a state title in 2003 and is currently ranked No. 3 in the state.

It is also home to one of the state's top six-man athletes in Jonathon Lindsey -- a standout football player and state champion discus thrower who remains largely hidden outside of six-man circles.

Lindsey, along with his coach, Dewaine Lee, would like to remedy their obscurity both by winning a state football title, and by getting the attention of college recruiters.

It won't be easy.

Six-man players typically are ignored by the collegiate ranks, forcing many players from tiny towns to walk on if they plan to continue playing after high school.

But Lee believes he has a genuine rarity in Lindsey, and intends to inform as many recruiters as possible.

"I played at Eastern New Mexico, so I know what Division II football is all about," said Lee, who guided the Greyhounds to the state title in his first year at Strawn. "You have to call people to get them interested about a (six-man) player -- they're not going to just come out and recruit them."

Lee believes Lindsey is worth a serious look, based on pure athleticism alone.

The 18-year-old senior stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 220 pounds. Aside from being able to throw a discus more than 180 feet, he can also dunk a basketball, run the 40-yard dash in 4.7 and he was a regional qualifier in powerlifting.

On the football side, Lindsey was a first-team all-state nose guard in 2007, and an honorable mention in 2006 -- but wasn't even listed in the "25 names you should know" six-man section in Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. He can heave a football nearly 65 yards in the air, he leads the Greyhounds with 29 tackles (10 for loss), and he's averaging an astonishing 25 yards in just eight carries as a running back.

"I think he could play tight end at the collegiate level, because his hands are unbelievable and he can jump out of the gym," Lee said. "That's why I think he's got a chance, because he's such a good athlete."

The problem is, few people outside Strawn are aware Lindsey exists.

The state track title helped to some degree, but he is hoping a throw of 200 feet in the spring will earn him a scholarship somewhere -- anywhere.

"No (recruiter) really pays attention to you when you're playing six-man," Lindsey said. "One person told me they'd be watching me, but no one really talks to you about football."

A regular in the Strawn weight room, Lindsey's work ethic was described by Lee as "second to none."

As a sophomore, he underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, yet had the moxie to rehabilitate himself in time to qualify for the regional track meet in the discus.

He has been a part of the Strawn football program since middle school, and served as a varsity manager during the Greyhounds' championship season of 2003.

"You always hear coaches talking about a kid being a joy to coach," assistant coach Brent Dawson said. "That's thrown around a lot, but if it were ever true about a kid, Jonathan really is a joy to coach. You never have to worry about him working hard -- it's like every atom in his body revolves around this team and football."

A little taste of disappointment didn't hurt.

Feeling they had a quality football team last year, the Greyhounds reached the regional semifinals and finished with a 6-5 record. But to a man, the entire team believed it failed to reach its full potential.

"We knew we should have been a lot better last year," Lindsey said. "Every game we lost, we had a million chances to win.

"Just coming back from losing like that, everyone is really ready to play this year. So if someone doesn't want to come out here and work, let 'em leave."

No mass exodus is foreseen.

On the contrary, the third-ranked Greyhounds (3-0) have been playing like they're on a mission, dismantling Follett (46-0), Prairie Lea (72-0) and Zephyr (62-14) in succession.

"Our goal is to win the state championship -- no beans about it," Lee said. "We don't want to sell ourselves short and just talk about winning district. Our sights are on winning the state championship.

"You can talk about it, but there's a difference between talking about it and really believing it. Our kids believe it.""
