NOVICE—"The most amazing statistic to come out of the game, may have been that Trent found time to punt. Twice.

How the Gorillas managed to do that while outslugging Novice in Friday’s incredible 132-86 six-man win defies explanation.

The 218 combined points broke the six-man state scoring record set last season, when Throckmorton defeated May 102-100 in five overtimes.

This game however, was completed in less than the allotted four quarters, with Trent scoring 32 straight points to end the game via the 45-point rule with 6:27 left in regulation.

“It was awesome to be a part of that,” said Trent coach Ronny Miller, whose team won its first game. “Everything was clicking offensively, then we got a few breaks on some onside kicks and it all just fell into place.”

Throwing caution to the wind in a game in which the defenses were virtually non-existent, Miller elected to start onside kicking following each score in the second half. It resulted in three recoveries, which helped the Gorillas to finally build a decisive cushion in the fourth quarter.

The Gorillas led 100-86 after three quarters.

Bradley Hutchinson led Trent with nine touchdowns. Quarterback Riley Majors threw eight touchdown passes, five of which were in the second half and three of which were to Hutchinson.

Novice was led by Josh Ariste with seven TDs.

As of Saturday, the completed statistics for the game were unavailable. No word as yet if NASA would be consulted in doing the final tally.

“There was no defense whatsoever on either side of the ball,” Novice coach Cameron Norris said. “(Hutchinson) didn’t get to play the last couple of games, so I didn’t get to see him on film and he sure made a lot of difference.”

Leading 52-46 at the break after scoring twice to take the lead, Trent expanded its lead to 14 points by the end of an outrageous third quarter that saw a combined 88 points scored in an eight-minute span. This included a startling four touchdowns in the first 57 seconds of the period.

In total, there were 15 scoring plays in excess of 30 yards and 30 touchdowns scored during the contest — a lofty total in a game played on an 80-yard field.

The longest gap between touchdowns was 2 minutes and 30 seconds midway through the second quarter. Yet, according to Miller, none of the Gorillas admitted to being tired.

“I was teasing some of them when they came off the field during the game,” said Miller with a laugh. “I’d give them a little nudge as ask, ‘You tired yet? and they’d just say ‘No — I’m not tired.’

“They were completely fired up.”

The victory improved the Gorillas’ record to 1-4 on the season. Trent’s 132 points was six more than it had scored in its previous four games combined.

Novice dropped to 3-3 with the loss. The Hornets gave up 74 points in a loss to Sidney, which is 7-0, and its defense had given up an average of 42 points a game through five contests before Friday night."
