The UIL has reported that the Class 2A superintendents voted on a binding resolution to divide Class 2A football into two separate divisions. The 2006 UIL data reported 225 Class 2A schools; however, the actual count was 186 football schools plus 15 basketball-only schools for a total of 201. One district (24AA) was a basketball only. Twenty-three districts had 3 representatives in the playoffs for a total of 69 schools.

Under the new plan Conference 2A football will be divided into two divisions prior to the start of the season. This will require 16 districts in Division I and 16 districts in Division II. Based on the 2006 data Division II would be from an enrollment of 200 to 291 and Division I would be from 292 to 429. Each district would have two representatives in the playoffs and 2A would have a total of 64 schools in the playoffs.

The problems will be in the far corners of the State. Way out west Alpine, Grape Creek, Wall, Kermit, and Denver City could make up one Division I District and 200 miles separates several of the schools. Deweyville in fare southeast Texas is the only Division II team in their district. They will probably go into a district with Groveton, San Augustine, Shelbyville, and Garrison. Corrigan Camden has lost significant population from 292 to 269 and should join the district. This would make all of Deweyville’s district games except for two more the 110 miles away.

Under this arrangement 2A will not have a larger school winning Division II than will win Division I.

I would not be surprised to see the UIL take this as an opportunity to expand Class 2A. The largest disparity in now in 3A (430-979) and 4A (980-2084) and the top of 4A will go up under the old plan.
If all of the 4A schools below 1000 drop to 3A the UIL would add 12 schools to 3A. This would require dropping all of the 3A schools with an enrollment below 450 to 2A Division I. This would add 12 schools to 2A for a total of 213 football schools. These changes would cause the Class 2A Division I to range from 300 to 450 and 2A Division II would range from 200-300.

If this plan materializes the UIL will have be best parity ever.
