I attended the Region III track and field meet at Humble yesterday. You see why some AAA football teams are so good and you wonder why some can’t play dead. In several races the class AAA kids out performed the AAAAA athletes. West Orange Stark has speed out the kazoo. They have one of the two fastest kids in the Southeast Texas and Houston area (the other is from Corrigan Camden). The WOS track team was all juniors and sophomores. Coach Hooks needs to use that speed to improve his pass defense. Gilmer’s receivers ran free in the WOS secondary last fall.
Tatum’s football team was a little down last year. Their track team was dominated by sophomores with a few juniors. Their sophomore tailback qualified for the state championship by finishing second in the 300IH and ran a 48.4 split on the winning 4x400 relay. It appears the eagles will be back in a hurry.
On the other hand the Taylor Ducks show up at the Regional T & F meet each year with speed and size. This year no different, they were loaded with fast and big athletes. Even though Taylor is one of the largest AAA schools in the state they very seldom can play dead on the football field.
